Donald Drive

Donald Drive   |   Orinda, California   |   4,000 square feet

As architect, designer and builder, we reshaped a 1949 ranch house into an approachable California hacienda. From the street, glimpses of the home peek invitingly through pines. Artfully rusted wrought-iron gates yield to mossy garden walks of antique brick that wind past cracked stucco walls and grayed woodwork to the recycled front door, evoking a long history in place. From the roof tiles to the plumbing fixtures, reused elements blend visual character with good environmental sense. Understated volumes and unexpected finishes echo the contrast of knotted Douglas fir with smooth veneer plaster. At the center, a large farmer’s kitchen with cooking fireplace and carved hutches opens to a family table, welcoming new memories.
